  • Dealing with Transitions
  • "Life at Hill & Dale is a series of hellos and goodbyes. Every year from June to September, endings and transitions are taking place. I have had many dialogues with site supervisors and held many meetings with parents and educators on the subject of transitions and how to support and talk to children about change."

    Social Competence
  • Creating Dispositions. Adults are facilitators who can guide children to create the disposition of empathy, optimism, cooperation and community. Lilian Katz talks about dispositions as being “habits of the mind".

  • Discipline: Learning with Love and Logic
  • The goal of discipline is to help children learn how to think and make decisions proactively. When children have been helped to make decisions based on empathy, understanding and their own critical thinking skills rather than on what the “rule” says, they have a skill they can use in a multitude of situations.

    Positive Limit Setting
  • Some example of positive limit setting:
    * You can climb outside. Right now we are going to sit down while we eat.
    * Yes, you can lift the spoon. Let’s find a safe way for you to use it.
    * You can talk with me instead of screaming.
    * I know that you are frustrated but I know you can solve the problem.

    How We Handle Health Screening
  • Everyday we examine the children for signs of illness. If you have given your child medication before they come to school please let us know.

    Philosophy on Food
  • Good eating gives children the nutrition they need. You do not, though, have to force children to eat certain foods or control the amount they eat. As they grow up, children will gradually learn to like a variety of food.

    On Praise
  • Many of us were raised in households where praise was handed out to validate appropriate behavior. In Becoming the Parent You Want To Be by Laura Davis and Janis Keyser the authors have illustrated some thoughts about praise for you to consider.

    Toilet Learning
  • At Hill & Dale we do not use the words "potty training". We use the words toilet learning. The process of saying good bye to diapers is an important experience rich with learning opportunities.
